Thanks to Marc Shaw for passing along the photo that was the basis for this pastel. There was something Van Gogh-like about the light and color, so I tried to push those a bit more. Yet another view of the varied Palouse.

Summer Morning

A bit different approach to tackle a photograph taken of the Palouse. I did it in pastels, but on a rather large scale, 24 X 36. No artistic reason - Julie wanted a large painting to put above the fireplace in the summer!

Evening Clouds Over the Mountains

When you live in Moscow, Idaho, you either come to love every variation of the look of the mountains or you take them for granted. Being married to a girl who has loved them all her life, it was inevitable I would come to love their ever-changing looks, too. Much like the ocean, they are never look the same day to day. So...one more view, in late summer, with pastels.

We Need a Little Christmas

Much as I love the sunlight we've enjoyed for weeks, I just thought it'd be fun to do a little pastel to remember one day last winter - Moscow Mountain at sunset.

Haystack At Twillight

Reverting to one of my family's favorite spots, Cannon Beach (Oregon), with its wonderful, distinctive Haystack Rock. I've done it in acrylics and watercolor, so now I can add pastels to the list. It wasn't until I started working on it, that I noticed the little sand castle in the mid-ground. Floats In Two Views

Thought I'd try the same image, doing it first in watercolor, then in pastels. Different feeling from each one. I think I'm finding that watercolor is good for some views and pastels for others - profound, right?

Pastel Practice

Got a hankering for doing some pastels, after a hiatus of about 30 years! (Last time I did one was in college.) So, I bought the pastel set above and some special boards. The photo is a scene Julie and I get to see very often on the east side of Moscow, where we live. The middle photo shows the underlayers I like to put down with pastels. I will try a few more to see if I like the pastels as much as watercolor (probably not). They are messy, but fun!
