Saw this ancient building in the harbor of Astoria. Watercolor was the only way to go with it ( Sorry about the faded spot in the middle -just my poor photo skills with my table lamp).

TRGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11691793777978999029noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3042641785394541627.post-3838879719947990052016-12-01T21:16:00.000-08:002016-12-01T21:16:05.145-08:00Winter Trees

Another pastel inspired by Sarah Mortimore's photos of her home in the Moscow woods on a snowy late afternoon. We had an amazingly brilliant sunset a few weeks ago and Mike Church was able to get a great shot of it striking our Moscow Mountains. A pastel was needed, I felt. My new nephew-in-law (?), David, married my sweet niece, Attie. He's from a farming background and sent me a photo of his favorite combine, wondering if I could paint it for him. It was quite fun to do in pastels. The Palouse landscape is so much like the ocean - it never shows the same face twice! I loved this image with the iconic red barn tucked away, but very much a part of the image. This is the third painting I've done from photos taken by Sarah Mortimore at their home north of Moscow. The light and colors are what 'drew' me to it. A little watercolor of the 1955 Plymouth that was originally owned by Julie's uncle, then bought by our friend Dave Trail. After Dave died last winter, his wife decided to sell the car. My oldest granddaughter, Madeline, lives in New York. Her mother took a photo of her in a pensive mood at a restaurant. I loved the light, the mood, the colors, but most of all, the little 7 year-old girl!
TRGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11691793777978999029noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3042641785394541627.post-29728169555814565172014-12-23T16:33:00.002-08:002014-12-23T16:33:59.633-08:00Dead Trees

Though a bit late perhaps, but a last-of-autumn picture in pastels seemed appropriate. It's based on a photo that I believe my friend David Johnson took. I think it communicates our never-dull sunsets and earthy landscapes on the Palouse.
TRGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11691793777978999029noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3042641785394541627.post-3301916476665632602014-11-28T10:26:00.002-08:002014-11-28T10:26:46.594-08:00Central Park Lake

My daughter Kajsa lives in New York, not far from Central Park. She took a photo of this lake on an overcast day. I love the muted colors and the fact that it doesn't look like downtown NYC! So a rather quick, impressionistic watercolor seemed to be in order.
TRGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11691793777978999029noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3042641785394541627.post-75192017756454635152014-11-01T21:07:00.000-07:002014-11-01T21:07:05.068-07:00Boathouse At Sunset

Decided to do a fairly large (20 X 20) pastel of a beautiful evening shot taken of Lake Coeur d' Alene (80 miles north of Moscow) by the talented photographer Hannah Grieser. Carson and Wendy Sensing moved here recently from Tennessee and they bought a farm in the heart of the Palouse. She took a photo of their place this summer and said she felt like they now lived in a painting. So, I thought they should.TRGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11691793777978999029noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3042641785394541627.post-38473724396352605852014-09-27T20:43:00.000-07:002014-09-27T20:43:05.209-07:00Blue Tractor Sunset

This painting is based on a local photo by our neighbor and a Logos alum, David Johnson. A pastel based on a photo by Mackenzie Miller (two of her boys), I think this view says so much about the joy we all share in a Palouse harvest time! This is the 'other shoe' being dropped; the second pastel from source photos by Sarah Mortimore, taken from their home last winter.
